An Insiders Take on “Strictly The Best Live" 2016 -- Her View

Posted by on in News

Written by Ladie English

Photos by Winston Rodney

November 29, 2016 VP Records in cooperation with Ting & Ting hosted an impressive launch party for Strictly The Best Live at The Paper Box in Williamsburg Brooklyn NY. Despite being a rainy evening, a good showing of friends and fans came out to catch live performances by popular Reggae artistes Spice and Christopher Martin with early juggling by DJ's Noah Powa, ChromaticThe Ultimate and Kitty Cash who all got attendees ready for the dynamic showcase performances that followed.

I must begin by giving huge kudos to a DJ I've never heard of before namely Kitty Cash of Trini ancestry. While the other DJ's were definitely smashing, Kitty Cash caused the Paper Box crowd to catch-ah-fiya with her set! She invited dancers on stage and played a wide range of music from Reggae, Ragga and Soca  to Afrobeat and Hip Hop. DJ Kitty Cash has a get on the dance floor flow that is so nice that everyone trying to keep up broke into a heated sweat; music for all to enjoy you can bet that anywhere she is scheduled to play, I'll be there!

As attendees waited for the featured artistes to appear on stage, VP Records hosted CD giveaways lead by popular DJ Noah Powa; he kicked off playing a song from “STB 55” and the audience was given a chance to guess the name of the artist singing. Since I consider myself a Reggae music aficionado I marched up to the stage and said “Jahmiel” loudly into the mic ANNNK...wrong answer...I was mortified! Another young lady gave the correct answer (which was Vershon) and won. Noah Powa then played another song this time from “STB 54” and ready to reclaim my dignity I marched right back to the stage where he asked “are you sure you have the correct answer?” to which I replied “absolutely.” He then asked for the name of the artist and I replied “Romaine Virgo.” Was I right? YES – VICTORY and I left the stage with a copy of the STB 54 album I can't wait to play and, feeling vindicated. As they say, never give up!

Christopher Martin was the first featured artist to take the stage and after a few hiccups with his tracks we heard the hit song from his Cheaters Prayer album (2012) “Don't Let Me Cheat on my Girlfriend”. After realizing that the DJ was still struggling with his tracks he easily went acapela singing “Magic” from his upcoming album. Martin has a fantastic voice and I hold him in the same high esteem as top artistes Sanchez and Romaine Virgo; they all have in common the ability to belt out songs with or without background music with a purity of voice that needs no electronic synthesizers or echo machines to enhance the sound. Christopher Martin continued to give us a wonderful set with songs like “Make Love Under The Influence” and a track from STB 55 called “Pirate of the Caribbean.” With all the songs well performed my personal favorite for the evening was“Big Deal.” During his entire time onstage the crowd roared their approval but when he ended his set with the song "Mama" he told the audience to “buss a blank” for their Mama and at that point everyone went wild!

Last but not least Spice took the stage and living up to her stage name, her set was spicy! For longer than I can remember Lady Saw has been the Queen of Dancehall but now that she no longer sings racy commercial music and officially abdicated the throne, Spice was introduced to us by a VP Records representative as the reigning Queen of Dancehall. An entertainer to the core, last night Spice invited ladies in the audience to join her onstage and “Siddung Pon It” to her new song of the same name which naturally they did with great enthusiasm. She later sang her very first hit song made with VYBZ Kartel called “Romping Shop” which also went over well with the audience. I've actually only seen Spice on-stage twice and and now concluding that she is favorably naughty in the same vein as Allison Hinds and Saucy Wow Denise Belfon. Spice also invited men on stage and put them to the challenge of keeping up with her in dance to see what they could do. With lot's of nudging the first man bravely went onstage, gave it his best effort but just couldn’t manage to top the high-energy Spice and, was dismissed. The next gentleman that took the challenge gave his name as “Africa” and while he started out slow when challenged by Spice he stepped up his game making the entire African continent proud – that section was fun! All-in-all Spice gave us a combination of fun music and on-stage antics that together made her set so  HOT I'm looking forward to seeing her again in the future. Until then, see you on the inside of more great events!

Jah9 Releases Sophomore Album September 2016

Posted by on in News

DURING YEAR OF THE 9 (2 + 0 + 1 + 6)

For those who've been waiting for Rasta consciousness to mount resurgence in contemporary reggae, Jah9 is a figure of revelation and deliverance.  The Jamaican-born singer-songwriter, poet and producer, who has been covered by the likes of Vogue and Vice about her crucial role in the coined "reggae revival," boasts a diverse musical range with inflections of soul and jazz deeply rooted in her sound.

She broke in the international reggae scene in 2014 with her debut album New Name featuring her bright yet symbolic single "Avocado."  Now she returns with her sophomore album '9' on 9/9. The nine-track selection is available for pre-order now via on VP Records/Steam Chalice Records.

'9' fulfills the promise of her earlier releases with expansive maturity, prophetic purpose and even deeper displays of warrior-goddess prowess on the mic. The combination of intellectual rigor, real world activism and lyrical musicality is well on display.

Jah9 expresses, "The number 9 is very intentional. It represents the unfolding of the spiral, a renewal in preparation for what is ahead. The Unknown is being embraced and there is no fear of the darkness: the feminine. The Year of Nine (2+0+1+6) brings this energy. It is thus a most appropriate time to share this vibration."

Jah9's journey is align with this cycle, evident on the opening track "Humble Mi." She explains that "the song was inspired by my whole journey and life unfolding, teaching me that knowing is not the journey because you will always have to know more. The journey is peace, love and balancing the energies within."

To spark this type of revelation and peace within, her nine-minute hypnotic track "In The Spirit," invites listeners to clear their minds and delve into a soulful exploration filled with lush instrumentation.

Thematically, there is no slacking in oppositional militancy. "This is warfare," she commands on the compelling and necessary track"Unafraid," which tackles the issue of child molestation head on. "Greatest Threat To The Status Quo" challenges ideals and embraces the powers of feminine energy with words like ''We are not separate /All emanating from the same divine plan/ So persecution of the feminine is the reason for the state the world is in/ A spiritual woman is the greatest threat to the status quo/ The fruits she will bare/ The power she has access to.''

She carries the same lyrical precision and confidence on the harmonically sophisticated romantic standout "Natural Vibe," a song of tightly coiled desire. ''My senses do not deceive me /These intense vibrations will crescendo one day real soon / This complicated melody will find its harmony in tune When the stars are aligned under the height of the moon."

Beyond her strengths as a lyricist, Jah9 is delivers an impressive performance as the primary producer of this  project. Additional collaborators include Andrew Campbell, Brecht De Beover, Earl 'Chinna' Smith, Tippy I of I Grade Records and Franklyn Irving (who also produced Jah9's "Steamers A Bubble").

In support of her anticipated release, Jah9 is hitting the live show circuit. She wrapped her U.S. portion of her Year of 9 (2+0+1+6) World Tour and is currently taking Europe by storm with fiery, righteous and commanding performances. She then heads to the motherland of Africa to deliver her message in September. She has a variety of festival and club dates mixed with select  "Yoga on Dub" events, where she incorporates the practice into her live performance. Visit for full tour schedule.

Maxi Priest, Gyptian, Bunji Garlin and Fay Ann Lyons Will Perform at the Free Daytime Concert
Sound Provided by Massive B (Bobby Konders & Jabba)
Jamaica Tourist Board Sponsors Event
Fox 5 Good Day NY Previews Event Today

VP Records has teamed up with SummerStage to celebrate the label's 35th year in business. From VP's artist roster, reggae stars Maxi Priest and Gyptian as well as soca royalty Bunji Garlin and Fay Ann Lyons will take the stage in NYC’s Central Park for this momentous occasion. DJs Bobby Konders and Jabba of Massive B will also provide sounds throughout the day. The free concert kicks off at tomorrow (Sat. June 27) from 2pm-7pm.
This year marks the 35th anniversary when VP Records’ founders Vincent and his wife Patricia Chin moved their headquarters from Kingston, Jamaica to Jamaica, New York – transforming their operations into the largest Caribbean music company worldwide. There will also be a special VP Records 35th anniversary pop-up exhibit entitled A Reggae Music Journey, which designed by acclaimed artist Michael Thompson. The display will be located outside of the event for all the patrons to enjoy.
"VP Records is proud to bring this all-star lineup into the heart of Manhattan. We're all looking forward to celebrating the 35th anniversary with an historic day of reggae and soca music in the park," states VP Records Senior Director of Marketing Brian Greenspoon.
Following several partnerships with VP Records, The Jamaica Tourist Board joins the label again as an official sponsor for the event. They will giveaway travel and merchandise on site. JTB's Business Development Manager Kris DaCosta says, "the VP Records and SummerStage collaboration is a great fit for us. Reggae music is a huge part of Jamaica's storied history and this event gives us a great opportunity to share with New Yorkers the good vibes to be had on Island."
SummerStage is also celebrating their 30th anniversary this year. SummerStage is a program of City Parks Foundation that presents performances of outstanding artistic quality, free of charge, to serve the diverse communities of New York City.  To celebrate their 30th anniversary, they have extended the season from May to October, and added more than 20 free shows in Central Park and 15 neighborhood parks across the city.
VP Records co-founder Patricia Chin adds “SummerStage’s 30th Anniversary and VP Records’ 35th Anniversary are significant milestones that we are honored to acknowledge together at the prestigious Central Park venue.”  After 35 years, Miss Pat (as her staff affectionately refers to her) is still very much involved with the day-to-day operations of VP Records.
Today, Maxi Priest and Gyptian performed their latest singles and Patricia Chin appeared on FOX 5 Good Day NY morning show to preview the event.
Maxi Priest
With over 15 million albums sold worldwide, multiple Grammy nominations and Top 10 Billboard hits (including the No. 1 smash “Close To You”) – the most successful solo act in British reggae history, Maxi Priest, continues to hit the road throughout 2015 in support of his first studio album in almost a decade, Easy To Love (VP Records). Easy To Love is a fine representation of pop, reggae and R&B blended together in one set. The title track was a No. 1 hit on reggae charts last summer, evidence that Maxi Priest has a gift for staying fresh. “Hearts Across The World” is a song for our times and pleas for people of all races to love one another. The soulful “Without A Woman” features Jamaican legend Beres Hammond and even echoes the themes and intensity of James Brown’s “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World.” Maxi continues to tug on women’s heartstrings with irresistible tributes of enduring affection on  “Loving You Is Easy,” “Holiday” and his rendition of John Mayer’s “Gravity.”
Jamaican reggae singer Gyptian broke into the reggae scene in 2005 with his string of hits like “Serious Times” “Beautiful Lady” and “Mama, Don’t Cry.” He hit international stardom in 2010 with his critically-acclaimed album Hold You and its RIAA certified Gold title track (produced by Ricky Blaze), which featured a Nicki Minaj remix, and earned him a 2010 MOBO and Soul Train award. Gyptian just released his new single "All On Me" and his latest fourth studio album Sex, Love and Reggae, which peaked at #1 on the Billboard Reggae Album chart, is a marked departure from his previous releases and unveils another layer of his artistry. The musically diverse set takes the listener from dancehall to soca to global pop and R&B sounds and features an eclectic mix of production from Jamaica – including Shane C. Brown. Justus Arison and Stanley “Rellee” Hayden, Russian and Linton “TJ” White – and is co-executive produced by Jerry “Wonda” Duplessis (Miguel, Mary J. Blige, Lupe Fiasco, the Fugees).
Bunji Garlin
Born Ian Alvarez, the Trinidadian ragga soca star Bunji Garlin is known for blending of soca with dancehall. Hailed recently by Rolling Stone as “America’s first soca star,” Garlin has clearly taken his native country’s genre to new heights. His single “Differentology (Ready For The Road),” which was remixed by Major Lazer & Busta Rhymes, was a massive hit in North America more than a year after its release in the Caribbean. In 2013, the single received a Soul Train Award win, was featured on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, won NYC’s HOT 97 FM’s Battle of The Beats competition and was chosen by NPR as one of the year’s favorite anthems as well as MTV Iggy’s Song of the Year. Garlin introduced soca to more mainstream music circuits by performing at last year’s SXSW, CMJ Music Festival, FADER Fort, Mad Decent Boat Party and alongside Jillionaire and Major Lazer during their 2014 tour stint. That same year, he made his national TV debut on BET’s 106 & Park to perform “Differentology” and returned for their Carnival takeover episode with Fay Ann Lyons and A$AP Ferg for their “Truck On D Road” remix. In his native country, he has won multiple Carnival competitions – including the “Ragga Soca Monarch” title, the Young King title and the coveted International Soca Monarch. He has released eight albums independently and three additional albums on VP Records – Revelation (2002), Global (2007) and Differentology (2014) –  the latter being a joint venture with RCA Records.
Fay Ann Lyons
Fay Ann Lyons is already a superstar in her native country of Trinidad and across the Caribbean. During Trinidad & Tobago’s Carnival season’s annual competitions, Fay Ann has set the record as the only female artist to score the Carnival Road March title three times, taking the crown in 2003, 2008 and 2009. In 2009, she also won International Soca Monarch in Groovy, People’s Choice and Power category and is the first soca artist ever to win that soca ‘triplet’ of titles. In addition to these feats, she has taken home 17 awards between the COTT (Copyright Organization of Trinidad and Tobago), NACC (National Action Cultural Committee Trinidad and Tobago) and SAO (Soca Awards Organization). The Point Fortin native has soca in her DNA. Her father Superblue, a soca legend who has won the Carnival Road March title nine times and Trinidad Soca Monarch competition seven times, was instrumental in honing Fay Ann’s skills as a songwriter and performer. She became a front-liner for the band Invazion led by Naya George and today is an official member of the Asylum band (previously known as “Censation”), founded by her husband and soca royalty Bunji Garlin. Fay Ann continues to tour worldwide and is recording her first solo full-length album on VP Records.
Massive B  (Bobby Konders & Jabba)
Massive B was formed over 10 years ago with DJ Bobby Konders’ vision of starting his own sound system. At its start, the voice behind Massive B was none other than Jabba. There have been many additions to Massive B as it continues to grow. New members include Big Dawg, Chudney Shotta, D-Life and X-Man, among others. Massive B has toured all over the globe, playing major festivals and dances, and representing NYC along the way. Locally, Massive B is a Brooklyn staple, performing annually at the borough’s West Indian Day Parade and weekly at the Buzz Nightclub for ‘Fire Sundays,’ where they spin the hottest reggae, dancehall, hip hop, R&B, and soca music. Bobby and Jabba can also be heard on-air every weekend on Hot 97 FM.
