"Marvel's Daredevil" Casts Elektra for Season 2

Posted by on in News

By Albert Ching

Add another major Marvel Comics player to the season season of "Daredevil" on Netflix: As made official on Marvel.com, Élodie Yung has been cast as Elektra, one of the most famous characters in the Daredevil mythos.

Here's the official description: "Yung will play Elektra, a mysterious woman from Matt Murdock's past whose dangerous and exotic ways may be more than he can handle." The first season of "Daredevil" contained references to Elektra, but the character was not seen on screen.

Created by comics legend Frank Miller, Elektra first appeared in 1981's "Daredevil" #168. A deadly assassin and sometimes hero, Elektra branched out from the "Daredevil" series to headline many of her own comics, including the acclaimed "Elektra: Assassin" miniseries and the "Elektra Lives Again" graphic novel.

"After a worldwide search, we found in Élodie the perfect actress to embody both Elektra's impressive and deadly physicality, as well as her psychological complexity," Head of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb said in Marvel's announcement. "“Paired with Charlie as Matt Murdock, the two will bring one of the most beloved and tumultuous comic book relationships to life with all the accompanying sparks and spectacular action sequences the show is known for."

Yung appeared in 2013's "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" as Jinx -- a similarly martial arts-centric character -- and will play Hathor in 2016's "Gods of Egypt." This is Elektra's second turn in live-action -- Jennifer Garner played the character twice, in 2003's "Daredevil" film and 2005 solo follow-up "Elektra."

Along with Elektra, it was announced last month that the Punisher -- another Marvel character who has starred in comics and feature films -- is set to join "Daredevil," as played by "The Walking Dead" veteran Jon Bernthal. "Daredevil" season two is scheduled to debut in 2016 on Netflix.

Cops Search Home of Subway Spokesman Jared Fogle

Posted by on in News

(CNN)Authorities on Tuesday searched an Indiana home of longtime Subway pitchman Jared Fogle in a probe the sandwich chain says may be linked to an investigation of someone who once worked for Fogle's foundation.

Investigators removed computers from the home in Zionsville, just north of Indianapolis, after arriving at about 6 a.m., Fogle attorney Ron Elberger said, without disclosing what they were looking for.

Elberger said Fogle, the man who soared to fame 15 years ago after saying he shed more than 200 pounds in part through a Subway diet, has not been charged or arrested.

"Jared has been cooperating with law enforcement in its investigation of certain unspecified activities and looks forward to its conclusion," the attorney said.

Tuesday's raid comes more than two months after the executive director of the Jared Foundation -- Fogle's organization that aspires to combat childhood obesity -- was arrested in Indianapolis on federal child pornography charges.

Authorities haven't said anything linking the search at Fogle's home to that case.

FBI Special Agent Wendy Osborne, responding to questions, said that the agency is "conducting investigative activity in the area," but that the nature of the investigation "can't be discussed at this time." U.S. Attorney's Office spokesman Tim Horty said he couldn't confirm or deny an investigation.

But Subway said that it believed the search was "related to a prior investigation" of someone who used to work for Fogle's foundation.

"We are shocked about the news and believe it (Tuesday's search) is related to a prior investigation of a former Jared Foundation employee," a Subway spokesman said. "We are very concerned and will be monitoring the situation closely. We don't have any more details at this point."

A non-uniformed man escorted Fogle from his home into a white truck parked in his driveway, video from CNN affiliate WTHR showed. The video shows gloved investigators carrying electronics from the home.

Later, WTHR reported, Fogle left the property in a car with his attorney.

Authorities have spoken to Fogle previously about the case involving his foundation's former executive director, Elberger said.

Fogle became famous in 2000 when the sandwich chain released a commercial centered on his claims that he dropped about 245 pounds -- from a peak weight of 425 -- in one year as an Indiana University student, thanks in part to exercise and a simpler diet involving Subway subs.

He served as a Subway pitchman in the ensuing years. In 2013, he told CNN's "Piers Morgan Live" that he traveled almost 200 days a year for his job with Subway, and that he still was focused on keeping weight off.

"I don't eat (Subway) every single day anymore. (It's) in moderation. I tell you, I kept the weight off for 15 years. I still probably average eating it three or four days a week," he said.

Donald Trump calls NBC 'weak and foolish' after they sever ties with GOP hopeful

Posted by on in News

NBC dumps Trump

Donald Trump labeled NBC as "weak and foolish" after they ended their business relationship with the GOP hopeful over his comments about immigrants from Mexico, and said he'd see the Peacock network in court.

“If NBC is so weak and so foolish to not understand the serious illegal immigration problem in the United States, coupled with the horrendous and unfair trade deals we are making with Mexico, then their contract violating closure of Miss Universe/Miss USA will be determined in court," Trump said in a statement to FOXNews.com. "Furthermore, they will stand behind lying Brian Williams, but won’t stand behind people that tell it like it is, as unpleasant as that may be.”

NBC cut ties with Trump after he, in his announcement to run for president, described immigrants from Mexico as "bringing drugs, they're bringing crime, they're rapists, and some, I assume, are good people."

“At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values," the network said in a statement. "Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump."

The network added that it was done with Trump's pageants as well.

"To that end, the annual Miss USA and Miss Universe Pageants, which are part of a joint venture between NBC and Trump, will no longer air on NBC."

NBC was co-owner with Trump of the pageants and is in business with him as host and producer of the popular show "The Celebrity Apprentice."

The network stated that their reality show with him was kaput, too.

"In addition, as Mr. Trump has already indicated, he will not be participating in 'The Celebrity Apprentice' on NBC. 'Celebrity Apprentice' is licensed from Mark Burnett's United Artists Media Group and that relationship will continue."

Before issuing his statement on the matter, Trump first addressed NBC's decision while speaking at an event at City Club of Chicago on Monday afternoon.

"Whatever they want to do is O.K. with me," he said. "I’ve had a lot of great relationships with NBC, I think as far as ending the relationship, I have to do that, because my view on immigration is much different than the people at NBC."

A petition posted on Change.org asking NBC to fire Trump had collected more than 215,000 signatures since being posted on June 26.

Last week, Univision, the nation's largest Spanish-language network, said it wouldn't air the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants, and will cut all future business ties with him.

At the time, NBC responded only by saying the company doesn't "agree with his positions on a number of issues including his recent comments on immigration." A sister network of NBC is Telemundo, another major Spanish-language TV outlet, which aired the Miss Universe pageants before Univision won the contract.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

VP Records has teamed up with SummerStage to celebrate the label's 35th year in business. From VP's artist roster, reggae stars Maxi Priest and Gyptian as well as soca royalty Bunji Garlin and Fay Ann Lyons will take the stage in NYC’s Central Park for this momentous occasion. DJs Bobby Konders and Jabba of Massive B will also provide sounds throughout the day. The free concert kicks off at tomorrow (Sat. June 27) from 2pm-7pm.

This year marks the 35th anniversary when VP Records’ founders Vincent and his wife Patricia Chin moved their headquarters from Kingston, Jamaica to Jamaica, New York – transforming their operations into the largest Caribbean music company worldwide. There will also be a special VP Records 35th anniversary pop-up exhibit entitled A Reggae Music Journey, which designed by acclaimed artist Michael Thompson. The display will be located outside of the event for all the patrons to enjoy.

"VP Records is proud to bring this all-star lineup into the heart of Manhattan. We're all looking forward to celebrating the 35th anniversary with an historic day of reggae and soca music in the park," states VP Records Senior Director of Marketing Brian Greenspoon.

Following several partnerships with VP Records, The Jamaica Tourist Board joins the label again as an official sponsor for the event. They will giveaway travel and merchandise on site. JTB's Business Development Manager Kris DaCosta says, "the VP Records and SummerStage collaboration is a great fit for us. Reggae music is a huge part of Jamaica's storied history and this event gives us a great opportunity to share with New Yorkers the good vibes to be had on Island."

SummerStage is also celebrating their 30th anniversary this year. SummerStage is a program of City Parks Foundation that presents performances of outstanding artistic quality, free of charge, to serve the diverse communities of New York City.  To celebrate their 30th anniversary, they have extended the season from May to October, and added more than 20 free shows in Central Park and 15 neighborhood parks across the city.

VP Records co-founder Patricia Chin adds “SummerStage’s 30th Anniversary and VP Records’ 35th Anniversary are significant milestones that we are honored to acknowledge together at the prestigious Central Park venue.”  After 35 years, Miss Pat (as her staff affectionately refers to her) is still very much involved with the day-to-day operations of VP Records.

Today, Maxi Priest and Gyptian performed their latest singles and Patricia Chin appeared on FOX 5 Good Day NY morning show to preview the event.

Maxi Priest
With over 15 million albums sold worldwide, multiple Grammy nominations and Top 10 Billboard hits (including the No. 1 smash “Close To You”) – the most successful solo act in British reggae history, Maxi Priest, continues to hit the road throughout 2015 in support of his first studio album in almost a decade, Easy To Love (VP Records). Easy To Love is a fine representation of pop, reggae and R&B blended together in one set. The title track was a No. 1 hit on reggae charts last summer, evidence that Maxi Priest has a gift for staying fresh. “Hearts Across The World” is a song for our times and pleas for people of all races to love one another. The soulful “Without A Woman” features Jamaican legend Beres Hammond and even echoes the themes and intensity of James Brown’s “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World.” Maxi continues to tug on women’s heartstrings with irresistible tributes of enduring affection on  “Loving You Is Easy,” “Holiday” and his rendition of John Mayer’s “Gravity.”

Gyptian
Jamaican reggae singer Gyptian broke into the reggae scene in 2005 with his string of hits like “Serious Times” “Beautiful Lady” and “Mama, Don’t Cry.” He hit international stardom in 2010 with his critically-acclaimed album Hold You and its RIAA certified Gold title track (produced by Ricky Blaze), which featured a Nicki Minaj remix, and earned him a 2010 MOBO and Soul Train award. Gyptian just released his new single "All On Me" and his latest fourth studio album Sex, Love and Reggae, which peaked at #1 on the Billboard Reggae Album chart, is a marked departure from his previous releases and unveils another layer of his artistry. The musically diverse set takes the listener from dancehall to soca to global pop and R&B sounds and features an eclectic mix of production from Jamaica – including Shane C. Brown. Justus Arison and Stanley “Rellee” Hayden, Russian and Linton “TJ” White – and is co-executive produced by Jerry “Wonda” Duplessis (Miguel, Mary J. Blige, Lupe Fiasco, the Fugees).

Bunji Garlin
Born Ian Alvarez, the Trinidadian ragga soca star Bunji Garlin is known for blending of soca with dancehall. Hailed recently by Rolling Stone as “America’s first soca star,” Garlin has clearly taken his native country’s genre to new heights. His single “Differentology (Ready For The Road),” which was remixed by Major Lazer & Busta Rhymes, was a massive hit in North America more than a year after its release in the Caribbean. In 2013, the single received a Soul Train Award win, was featured on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, won NYC’s HOT 97 FM’s Battle of The Beats competition and was chosen by NPR as one of the year’s favorite anthems as well as MTV Iggy’s Song of the Year. Garlin introduced soca to more mainstream music circuits by performing at last year’s SXSW, CMJ Music Festival, FADER Fort, Mad Decent Boat Party and alongside Jillionaire and Major Lazer during their 2014 tour stint. That same year, he made his national TV debut on BET’s 106 & Park to perform “Differentology” and returned for their Carnival takeover episode with Fay Ann Lyons and A$AP Ferg for their “Truck On D Road” remix. In his native country, he has won multiple Carnival competitions – including the “Ragga Soca Monarch” title, the Young King title and the coveted International Soca Monarch. He has released eight albums independently and three additional albums on VP Records – Revelation (2002), Global (2007) and Differentology (2014) –  the latter being a joint venture with RCA Records.

Fay Ann Lyons
Fay Ann Lyons is already a superstar in her native country of Trinidad and across the Caribbean. During Trinidad & Tobago’s Carnival season’s annual competitions, Fay Ann has set the record as the only female artist to score the Carnival Road March title three times, taking the crown in 2003, 2008 and 2009. In 2009, she also won International Soca Monarch in Groovy, People’s Choice and Power category and is the first soca artist ever to win that soca ‘triplet’ of titles. In addition to these feats, she has taken home 17 awards between the COTT (Copyright Organization of Trinidad and Tobago), NACC (National Action Cultural Committee Trinidad and Tobago) and SAO (Soca Awards Organization). The Point Fortin native has soca in her DNA. Her father Superblue, a soca legend who has won the Carnival Road March title nine times and Trinidad Soca Monarch competition seven times, was instrumental in honing Fay Ann’s skills as a songwriter and performer. She became a front-liner for the band Invazion led by Naya George and today is an official member of the Asylum band (previously known as “Censation”), founded by her husband and soca royalty Bunji Garlin. Fay Ann continues to tour worldwide and is recording her first solo full-length album on VP Records.

Massive B  (Bobby Konders & Jabba)
Massive B was formed over 10 years ago with DJ Bobby Konders’ vision of starting his own sound system. At its start, the voice behind Massive B was none other than Jabba. There have been many additions to Massive B as it continues to grow. New members include Big Dawg, Chudney Shotta, D-Life and X-Man, among others. Massive B has toured all over the globe, playing major festivals and dances, and representing NYC along the way. Locally, Massive B is a Brooklyn staple, performing annually at the borough’s West Indian Day Parade and weekly at the Buzz Nightclub for ‘Fire Sundays,’ where they spin the hottest reggae, dancehall, hip hop, R&B, and soca music. Bobby and Jabba can also be heard on-air every weekend on Hot 97 FM.

SONY PICTURES AND MARVEL STUDIOS FIND THEIR 'SPIDER-MAN' STAR AND DIRECTOR

Tom Holland Cast as the Web-Slinger, Jon Watts to Direct the Next Spider-Man Adventure

By Marvel.com

Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios are proud to announce that after a full worldwide casting search, Tom Holland will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the next Spider-Man film, in theaters in IMAX and 3D on July 28, 2017.  The film will be directed by Jon Watts, director of "Cop Car," the upcoming thriller that made its debut earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival.

Marvel and Sony Pictures, and producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal conducted an extensive search for both the actor and the director.  The studios and producers were impressed by Holland’s performances in "The Impossible," “Wolf Hall,” and the upcoming "In the Heart of the Sea," and by a series of complex screen tests.  Following Marvel’s tradition of working with the brightest next wave of directors, Watts also went through multiple meetings with Feige, Pascal, and the studio, before winning the job.

Commenting on the announcement, Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Group Chairman, said, “It’s a big day here at Sony. Kevin, Amy and their teams have done an incredible job.  The Marvel process is very thorough, and that’s why their results are so outstanding.  I’m confident Spider-Man will be no exception.  I’ve worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent.  For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special.   All in all, we are off to a roaring start.”

Feige commented, “As with James Gunn, Joss Whedon, and the Russo brothers, we love finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life.  We spent a lot of time with Jon and find his take and work inspiring.”

Pascal added, “Sony, Marvel, Kevin and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world.  With Tom, we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

Sony Pictures will finance and release worldwide the next installment of the $4 billion Spider-Man franchise on July 28, 2017, in a film co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the Web-Slinger.

Spider-Man, embraced all over the world, is the most successful franchise in the history of Sony Pictures, with the five films having taken in more than $4 billion worldwide.
